RECENT WORK - NEW BILLBOARD FACES - JULIAN (near san diego) CA
Here's a project Big City got to do recently in Julian, CA - in the mountains east of San Diego.
Originally built in the 1930's, this billboard has been through a couple of remodels. My client had the previous faces made in the early 2000's. The work has the look and style of old-school sign painting.
Back in the day, the professional sign painter made mockups to show the client what their sign would look like by hand painting the scale drawing. It would also work as the on-site key for reproduction at full size. The photo above is the original drawing provided to my client. I scanned it and imported into Illustrator.
The two-sided sign had held up well, considering the exposure to the elements. This is the west face…
…this is the east face.
A bit of complication for my client happened when the local electric utility placed that power pole in front of the east face of the sign. The new design was adjusted for readability in this new visual environment.
So after scanning and digitizing the artwork, printing began on what is basically car wrap vinyl.
The panel material is 1/8" dibond aluminum composite, with the printed and laminated facing applied to it. Next - on to installation!
Since I had my hands full installing the panels, I didn't take a lot of pictures. Got this one, though - right before the old sign was covered forever. Before and after, all in one shot!
So how did the project look when completed? Here are the photos. (Next step for the client is going to be refurbishing the structure…) Another happy client!
