Recent work - school murals for Lynwood High School

Lynwood High School in the Los Angeles area moved into a freshly remodeled facility this summer. As things finished up with the remodel, Big City Signs was contracted to provide hand painted school murals at the school.

Below are some details, along with some how-it-was-done info.

At the south end of the school gym this wall needed…something. The wall is about 115 ft wide x 25 ft high. The letters are 9 ft high. That’s a LOT of paint, and a lot of work!

Over in the middle of the school, you’ll find this hand painted Knight school mascot mural. He’s about 16 ft wide x 20 ft high.

Progress for the painted gym wall went like this… (see captions)

The mascot layout was applied to the building, and some patching with paintable caulking done for some old concrete seams.

The mascot was then painted with multiple coats of white and yellow.

Next came the lettering layout. These large areas of yellow paint required at least two coats, again – a LOT of paint.

Following the yellow letters came the purple outlines — about 8 inches wide. This gave the name a bold, contrasty impact. Then, of course the little black 14 inch letters up top. Completed gym portion of this hand painted school mural work — and always try to work in a photo of your truck!

Then came the Knight mascot hand painted mural portion of the work. Progress for the painted Knight went like this… (see captions)

The layout was applied to the wall — note the very rough texture stucco! What challenges this school mascot mural didn’t provide for me in size, compared to the gym mural above, it sure had in texture! And of course, it required multi-coating white and yellow colors.

By the way, I did a blog post tutorial with tips for painting graphics on stucco at this link for anyone interested.
