RECENT WORK: CAL POLY SAN LUIS OBISPO WATER TOWER HAND PAINTED GRAPHICS

This project has been in the works for a couple of years — provide three new hand painted logos in place of 10 year old vinyl logos. My client at the campus noticed the work I did at UC Irvine on a similar water tower. They had a project that required expertise, and they gave me a call. Details about how the job was accomplished below…

Cal Poly SLO water tower hand painted logo

This project came as a call for help - about ten years ago there were three digital print (think car wrap) graphics placed where these painted graphics are today. Everything was fine for a few years, then the sun began to take it’s toll on the vinyl material. Here’s a close-up of how it looked by the time I was contacted:

Side note: vinyl wraps are not a good choice for everything. Paint may fade, but vinyl looks terrible when it’s been up past it’s prime. My advice: find a good sign painter.

So the task was to remove the old vinyl graphics, clean the surface thoroughly, paint a matching background color, and hand paint the new graphics.

See the captions below the photos:

All the old vinyl had to be removed by grinding it off. Very time consuming, very exhausting.

Then it was time to paint the background color…

Half and half! The left side ready to paint, the right side finished painting.

Painting progress! Of course, I touched up the thin spots.

And then, since even good things must end, the job was complete!
